Dutch law students win Plesner's international Pre-Moot competition

On 8 and 9 March, Plesner hosted its second international Pre-Moot competition leading up to the annual Vis Moot in Vienna, the world's biggest and most prestigious competition for law students. Ten universities from across Europe took part in Plesner's Pre-Moot.

With the 2018 edition of the Plesner Pre-Moot successfully completed, we would like to thank all the teams for their enthusiasm and excellent performances over the two days of the Pre-Moot. We wish everyone good luck for the main competition!

Ten universities took part in Plesner's Pre-Moot, including teams from France, Holland, Iceland, Poland, Switzerland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany and Denmark.

We would also like to thank the experienced practitioners who participated as arbitrators for the high-quality feedback and "real-life" observations provided to the students, allowing the teams to refine their arguments and take their advocacy skills to the next level in preparation for the rounds of oral argument in Vienna.

And the winners are…

In a very close competition, the top-3 teams in this year's Pre-Moot were:

  1. Leiden University (the Netherlands)
  2. University of Fribourg (Switzerland)
  3. University of Southern Denmark (Denmark)

The Best Individual Oralist this year was: Sigríður María Egilsdóttir (University of Reykjavik, Iceland)

Congratulations to all the winners!

Vis Moot

Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot ("Vis Moot") is the biggest and most prestigious arbitration competition for international law students. The competition is held every year in Vienna and 2018 will be its 25th year. This year, the students are conducting a fictitious arbitration case about defects and deception with respect to the origin of chocolate cakes sold in supermarkets under the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG).

The Vis Moot competition plays an important role in relation to the development of future litigators and umpires. At the same time, the competition contributes to strengthening relations between litigators in the area of international dispute solution.

Plesner wishes to participate actively in this development and invest in future generations. This is why Plesner hosted the Pre-Moot again this year, and why we will be sending a team of lawyers from Plesner to Vienna to arbitrate in the Vis Moot competition.

Plesner will host another Pre-Moot in 2019.
