The Minister for Health has activated the Danish drug preparedness programme

The Danish drug preparedness programme has been partially activated effective until 30 June 2021 due to the present Covid-19 pandemic.

The drug preparedness programme was activated so that measures can be taken to ensure the supply of vital medicines.

The activation entails that, among other things, the Danish Medicines Agency can

  • order companies holding Section 39 authorisations to report information about their stock of active substances, intermediate products, and medicinal products;
  • order companies holding Section 39 authorisations to report all information on the company's operations if the information is necessary for allowing the Danish Medicines Agency to have the necessary overview of active ingredients, intermediate products, and medicinal products in Denmark; and
  • order companies holding Section 39 authorisations to reduce or disperse stocks of active ingredients, intermediate products and medicinal products, including medicinal products not yet approved or launched in Denmark.

The activation of the drug preparedness programme also entails that, among other things, the Danish Medicines Agency can order pharmacies to

  • only dispense prescription drugs in smaller quantities than originally prescribed for a specified period;
  • repackage larger medicinal product packings into smaller packings; and
  • order the substitution of drugs to be excluded.

Additionally, the Danish Medicines Agency can implement a number of measures in relation to the dispensing of over-the-counter drugs; for instance it can restrict the dispensing of said products.

Plesner will keep track of the developments.
