Agreement on deposits on drink cans and bottles bought in German border shops

Attorney-at-Law and partner Søren Stenderup Jensen is the author of an article in the most recent issue of International Law Office (ILO) - Environmental & Climate Change. The article is about a new agreement between Germany and Denmark on deposits on drink cans and bottles bought in German border shops.

At the end of May 2015 the Danish Parliament gave its support to an agreement with Germany on deposits on drink bottles and cans bought in German border shops. The purpose of the agreement is to ensure that more drink bottles and cans bought in border shops are recycled instead of often being thrown out together with the ordinary waste.

Nine out of ten drink bottles or cans will be recycled if they are subject to deposits. The introduction of the deposit is consequently expected to have a great impact on the environment and climate as it will hopefully mean that fewer drink bottles and cans are thrown away and that fewer resources are spent on extracting aluminium for the manufacture of cans.

In the article Søren reviews the details in the agreement with Germany and the expectations for the implementation.
